Philosophers write a lot about pop culture, but the popular artists are often very silent towards philosophers. Not so this month…
Not only did Alain Badiou get some unusual press as a result of one of Taylor Swift’s friends carrying a tote bag with his 2012 book titled Philosophy for Militants but Eugene Thacker had an entire RadioLab episode devoted to the somewhat unusual appearance of his book In the Dust of This Planet in multiple mass media outlets. Does this mean that an increased cultural awareness of life’s potential on Earth to end as we know it is beginning to make itself known? At a time when there is an ongoing mass extinction of species this could be a significant shift. Maybe. However I imagine that Eugene would say that it, like life, is completely meaningless.
